What to expect at a medical weight loss consult
Every clinic works a little differently. This is a general guide.
Before you go
- Write down your goals and any past weight loss attempts.
- List your current medications, supplements, and health conditions.
- Bring your insurance card, even if you plan to pay cash.
- Prepare questions (see our cost checklist).
The visit, step by step
- Health history. You will answer questions about your medical history, family history, eating patterns, sleep, and activity.
- Measurements. Expect weight, height, blood pressure, and sometimes body composition.
- Lab work. Many clinics order blood tests, such as blood sugar, cholesterol, thyroid, and kidney function. This may happen the same day or at a separate visit.
- Treatment discussion. The clinician explains options, which may include medication, nutrition support, and lifestyle changes. A good clinician reviews benefits, risks, and costs, and tells you if a medication is not right for you.
- Your plan. You leave knowing what to take, when to start, how doses change, and when you will be seen again.
Follow-up
Expect check-ins every few weeks at first, in person or by telehealth, to adjust doses, manage side effects, and track progress. Ask how to reach the clinic between visits.
Good signs
- You see a licensed clinician and have your questions answered.
- Prices and policies are explained clearly in writing.
- No pressure to decide on the spot.
